That alarm goes off and in your groggy state, you instinctively hit the snooze button. You are tired and that extra 10-15 minutes of sleep seems like it is exactly what you need. However, you also want to wake up earlier.

Then you hear that awful buzzing sound again and it didn’t bring you any relief. I’m betting you feel worse than when it first sounded. (And probably more annoyed too.)

You drag yourself out of bed and can’t believe how tired you are. You mustn’t have slept well last night. Or maybe you went to bed too late. You shouldn’t have watched the last episode of The Walking Dead or played those last five rounds of Candy Crush.

None of those things are what made you tired. The reason you are so groggy is that you hit the snooze button. Just taking that extra ten minutes of rest cost you a productive day and earned you four hours of grogginess. Aren’t you proud?

Tip #1: Move Your Alarm

Putting your alarm in another room forces you to get up and turn it off. If you have a bathroom attached to your alarm that is the perfect place to put it.  You can see tip #3 for more information on why the bathroom is the perfect place to put your alarm.

Tip #2: The 5 Second Countdown

 

If you find yourself struggling to pull yourself out of bed this technique is amazing and can be used in every situation in your life where you procrastinate or feel fear.  You know you made the choice to get earlier now when you think of all the reasons you want or need to sleep simply start counting down like you are a rocket ship waiting for blast off on your next mission in space.   5, 4, 3, 2, 1…..MOVE!! When you do the 5-second countdown you force your body to stop thinking and start moving.  I learned this principle from reading the book, The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins. I highly recommend it for if you are trying to transform your life or overcome fears.

 

Tip #3: Wash Your Face & Brush Your Teeth

 

If you put your alarm in the bathroom you are in the perfect place to get this done.  If not, make your way to the bathroom and splash cold water right on your face.  Then grab the toothbrush and start brushing your teeth.  It’s great hygiene and gets you moving right away.

Tip #4: Do Not Check Your Phone

 

Some of us sleep with them or even use them as an alarm. But the worst mistake you can make in the morning after getting up early is to waste that extra time scrolling Facebook, Instagram, and checking your e-mail.  Instead, sit down at the kitchen table and make a list of the three most important things you have to do today.  That is beginning your day with intention. Then start your workout or meditation for the day.

Don’t hit the snooze button on your life anymore. Make your day productive by getting up at least one hour earlier. You have amazing things to do don’t waste that time being lazy and unproductive.
